The Benalulua, also known as the Bena Lulua, are a people of the central Democratic Republic of Congo whose carving tradition is known for its detailed figures and objects of daily use. This small mortar with legs was used in the preparation of medicinal and cosmetic pastes, and its scale reflects the personal and household nature of that work. The raised legs keep the vessel off the ground during grinding, which is both practical and characteristic of the form. The piece previously belonged to Christine Valluet in Paris before entering a private New York collection.
