This wooden headrest originates from the Dinka people of South Sudan. Carved from a single block of wood, it features a curved top supported by four legs, with a central openwork element and decorative triangular cutouts. A braided cord is attached to the ends, allowing the user to carry the headrest over the shoulder or hang it when not in use.

Among the Dinka, headrests serve practical and symbolic purposes. They elevate the head during sleep to protect elaborate hairstyles and prevent contact with the ground. These items are also associated with personal identity, continuity, and status, often accompanying individuals throughout their lives. Some are passed down through generations.

The Dinka are one of the largest ethnic groups in South Sudan, primarily pastoralists who rely on cattle for livelihood, social status, and ceremonial functions. Their material culture reflects a mobile lifestyle and close relationship with livestock, with objects like headrests designed for durability, portability, and symbolic resonance.
