This carved wooden headrest was made and used by the Dinka people of South Sudan. Headrests like this serve both practical and cultural purposes: they elevate the head during sleep, protect elaborate hairstyles, and act as personal possessions that reflect status and identity.

This particular headrest features decorative metal inlays across the top and sides, a detail that distinguishes it from more minimal forms. It was likely owned by someone of high social standing or wealth. The curved upper section is designed for resting the head, while the three-legged base ensures stability on the ground.

The Dinka are one of the largest ethnic groups in South Sudan. They are primarily semi-nomadic cattle herders, and livestock plays a central role in their economy, social structure, and belief systems. Personal items like headrests are used in everyday life but also reflect deeper cultural values, including the importance of appearance, rest, and individuality.
