This 20th-century headrest is used by the Boni of northeastern Kenya and southern Somalia, as well as Somali nomads. Featuring a curved top and intricate patterns, it symbolizes alertness and status. The small, unstable base prevents falling asleep without toppling over, reflecting vigilance. Made from fine-grained wood, these headrests are often carried by herdsmen to rest while watching their herds. The patterns may also reflect Islamic influence and be interpreted as prayers for protection.
