This carved wooden jug originates from the Tutsi people living in the eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Jugs of this kind were traditionally used to store and pour liquids such as milk, water, or locally brewed beverages. Its tall, narrow shape helps with easy handling and controlled pouring, while also conserving contents in hot climates.
The vertical seam visible along the body is a repair made to extend the jug’s functional life which is a reflection of the value placed on utilitarian objects within Tutsi communities. These vessels were typically made from a single piece of wood and were used regularly in both domestic and ceremonial settings.
The Tutsi in the DRC are part of a larger Great Lakes cultural region, sharing language and customs with Tutsi communities in Rwanda and Burundi. Traditionally cattle herders, the Tutsi have long associated livestock with social and economic status, and many of their material objects, including milk jugs, are tied to this pastoral way of life. Items like this jug offer insight into everyday practices and the continuity of tradition within Tutsi households.
